Macau Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling as immigration policies can change.
Macau, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, maintains its own immigration policies separate from mainland China. The territory welcomes millions of visitors annually with a relatively straightforward entry process for most nationalities. Most travelers can enter Macau visa-free for short stays, making it an accessible destination for tourists and business visitors alike. The immigration process in Macau is generally efficient and streamlined, with most visitors clearing immigration within minutes at the airport, ferry terminals, or land border crossings. Macau has multiple entry points including Macau International Airport, ferry terminals connecting to Hong Kong and mainland China, and land borders at the Portas do Cerco (Border Gate), Cotai, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint. Travelers should be aware that while Macau has separate immigration from mainland China and Hong Kong, crossing between these territories requires passing through immigration controls each time. A valid passport with at least one month (preferably six months) validity beyond your intended stay is essential. It's important to note that a visa for mainland China does not grant entry to Macau, and vice versa, as they operate under different immigration systems.

Upon arrival, follow signs to immigration. Lines are typically separated for Macau residents, mainland Chinese visitors, and foreign passport holders. Choose the appropriate queue.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents organized and easily accessible before reaching the immigration counter to speed up the process.
Ensure your passport is in good condition with no damage, as damaged passports may cause entry issues.
Keep your entry stamp visible and don't overstay your permitted duration, as this can result in fines and future entry bans.
If arriving from mainland China or Hong Kong, remember you'll need to clear immigration even though you're within Greater China.
Download offline maps and have your hotel address written in Chinese characters, as this helps with communication if needed.
Exchange a small amount of currency before arrival or have a credit card ready, as you may need local currency (MOP or HKD) for immediate expenses.
If you're unsure about any requirements, arrive at the immigration counter with confidence but be polite and cooperative with officers.
Take a photo of your passport information page and entry stamp as a backup in case of loss or theft.

Macau customs regulations are relatively liberal for personal items and reasonable quantities of goods for personal use. However, certain items are prohibited or restricted, and large amounts of currency must be declared. Customs officers may conduct random inspections of baggage.

Must be 18 years or older. Alcohol for personal consumption only. Commercial quantities will be subject to duty.

19 cigarettes or 1 cigar or 25 grams of other tobacco products

Macau does not currently require specific vaccinations for entry for most travelers. However, health requirements can change, particularly in response to disease outbreaks. Travelers should check current requirements before departure.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required only if arriving from or having transited through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Certificate of vaccination must be presented.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure you're up to date with routine vaccines including MMR, DPT, chickenpox, polio, and yearly flu shot
  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for most travelers as it can be contracted through contaminated food or water
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Japanese Encephalitis - Consider if spending extended time in rural areas, though risk in urban Macau is minimal
  • Typhoid - Consider for travelers eating outside major restaurants and hotels

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is highly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical care in Macau is of good quality but can be expensive for visitors. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation and repatriation. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers accessible.

Current Health Requirements: Health requirements may change in response to disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, Avian Flu, or other public health emergencies. Check the Macau Health Bureau website and your home country's travel advisory before departure. Be prepared for possible health screenings at entry points including temperature checks and health declarations. Some travelers may be required to show proof of vaccination or negative test results depending on current global health situations and countries visited recently.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport regardless of age. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) authorizing the travel, though this is not always checked. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate. For divorced parents, carry custody documents. In case of deceased parent, carry death certificate. These documents help avoid potential questioning at immigration about child custody and trafficking concerns.

Traveling with Pets

Pets entering Macau require an import permit obtained in advance from the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM). Required documents include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days before arrival but not more than 1 year), health certificate issued by official veterinarian within 10 days of travel, microchip identification, and proof of rabies antibody titre test for dogs and cats. Pets must undergo quarantine inspection upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Contact IACM at +853 2833 7676 well in advance of travel as processing can take several weeks.

Extended Stays

If you need to stay longer than your visa-free period allows, you must apply for an extension at the Macau Immigration Department before your authorized stay expires. Extensions are not guaranteed and are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities. You'll need to provide: valid reason for extension, proof of financial means, accommodation proof, and return ticket. Apply at least 5-7 days before your current authorization expires. Overstaying can result in fines (MOP 500-5,000), detention, deportation, and future entry bans. For long-term stays (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit before arrival or shortly after, depending on the category.

Business Travelers

Business visitors entering visa-free can attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations but cannot engage in paid employment. For work purposes, you need a work visa and permit obtained through your Macau employer before arrival. Business travelers should carry: invitation letter from Macau company, business registration documents, proof of business relationship, and detailed itinerary. If bringing professional equipment, declare it at customs and consider obtaining a temporary import permit to avoid duties.

Students

Students planning to study in Macau must obtain a student visa before arrival. The educational institution will sponsor your application. Required documents typically include: acceptance letter from Macau educational institution, proof of financial support, academic transcripts, health examination report, and police clearance certificate. Student visas are typically issued for the duration of the course. Part-time work may be restricted. Apply well in advance as processing can take 6-8 weeks.

Transit Passengers

Transit passengers remaining airside (not passing through immigration) do not need a visa regardless of nationality. If you want to leave the airport during transit, you must pass through immigration and meet the entry requirements for your nationality. Macau is compact and can be explored during longer layovers. Ensure you have sufficient time to clear immigration, visit the city, and return for your onward flight (recommend minimum 6-8 hours between flights).
